Practice tests

Every drill and full-length test has 10 questions.

Every question type, explained

What you'll actually see

The interactive test uses three question formats. Here's how each one works, what it really measures and where candidates lose points. Every demo is a working question from our practice set — try it.

01

Spot the errors

Five equations are shown. Tap every equation that is wrong to slice it — there are always between one and three.

What it tests

Quick, accurate mental arithmetic and the order of operations: × and ÷ before + and −, brackets and powers first.

Common pitfalls

  • Working left to right: 4 + 6 × 2 is 16, not 20
  • Reading a square as × 2: 7² is 49, not 14
  • Assuming there is exactly one wrong equation

Tip: Check every equation, even when you have already found one error — there can be up to three.

02

Number path

Drag 1–3 of the five operations into the empty bubbles so the top number turns into the bottom number, step by step.

What it tests

Chained calculation: applying +, −, ×, ÷ and percentages one after another, and seeing which order works.

Common pitfalls

  • Using the right operations in the wrong order — 80 − 10 then × 50% is not the same as × 50% then − 10
  • Confusing × 150% (half again) with + 150
  • Forgetting that each step works on the result of the previous step

Tip: Work backwards from the bottom number: which option could produce it as the very last step?

03

Complete the sum

Drag 1–3 of the five numbers into the blanks so the calculation gives the answer on the right.

What it tests

The order of operations in reverse: knowing that × and ÷ happen before + and −, and that brackets come first.

Common pitfalls

  • Calculating 12 + 7 × 3 as 57 instead of 33
  • Ignoring brackets in sums like 15 × (10 − 1)
  • Using the same number twice — every number can be used once

Tip: Do the × or ÷ part first in your head, then see what is left for the + or − part.

Know what is being assessed

Speed and the order of operations

The Numerical Calculation test checks whether you can do standard calculations quickly and correctly, and whether you understand the order of operations. Instead of picking an answer, you tap and drag.

The biggest point-losers are not hard sums but the rules: × and ÷ come before + and −, brackets and powers come first, and in a number path every step works on the previous result. Our questions are built to drill exactly that.

A smarter preparation routine

  1. 01

    Check your invitation

Confirm the exact test name, deadline, calculator rules and any adjustments agreed with the employer.

  2. 02

    Get the method right first

Refresh percentage changes, proportions, ratios and averages. Review why an answer is correct rather than memorising it.

  3. 03

    Add time pressure

Once the format feels familiar, rehearse under the conditions given in your invitation and look for where you lose time.

  4. 04

    Prepare your test-day setup

Use a stable connection and a quiet space. Read the official instructions and complete any introductory examples carefully.

Your assessment questions, answered

Is this the same as SHL Verify Numerical Ability?

No. They are separate tests. Numerical Ability uses a multiple-choice format, while this page focuses on interactive numerical calculation. Use the exact name in your invitation to choose your preparation.

Will these be my actual assessment questions?

We cannot know your employer's question set. The goal is to prepare for the skills and interaction types, not to provide confidential assessment questions.

How long is the assessment?

The overview above is provisional and may differ from your assessment. Your employer's invitation and the official test instructions are the source of truth for the question count and time limit.

Can I take the free preview now?

Yes. The free preview has 5 questions covering every interactive question type, with a results overview and step-by-step solutions at the end. You get two free sessions.
